Taught Sessions

Taught Sessions are regular lessons that are led and taught by an instructor. These will be the backbone of any training programme, as the opportunity to learn from an instructor is valuable and can help to guide self-study. These sessions are also the best way to start learning a new activity, as the instructor can give you all the necessary information to familiarise yourself with how things are done, and can give you pointers about what to work on next.

Members and guests can pay a small, one-off fee to attend a taught session, or can use a multi-session pass (better value per session if you would like to attend several sessions). Premium Members can attend any number of taught sessions free of charge.

Open Sessions

Open Sessions are times when The Vanguard Centre is open but not in use for any Taught or Private Sessions. You can drop into the Centre during an Open Session and use it for your private training, for archery, fencing, sparring, or whatever you want to work on by yourself. Such sessions are a helpful addition to your training programme, as you can spend some time working on something that has been giving you problems, giving yourself the repetitions necessary to get better at a skill. Most experienced and skilful fencers and archers take every opportunity during the week to add a little solo practice time to their schedule. These sessions can also be an excellent opportunity to meet up with a friend to work on something together.

Members and guests can pay a small, one-off fee to attend a one-hour Open Session, or can use a multi-session pass (better value per session if you would like to attend several sessions). Premium Members can attend any number of Open Sessions free of charge.

Private Sessions

Private Sessions are times in the schedule that are reserved for a private booking, for something like a birthday party or a private training session for a small group of people. During private sessions, the venue is not available for Open Sessions or any other form of drop-in activity.

If you would like to arrange a private session for your birthday party, stag party, or some other activity, then please get in touch with us and see what we can do to help!

Private tuition with an instructor can be arranged for almost any time during the week, just get in touch with us and we will try to schedule in some personal coaching for you.

Special Sessions

Special Sessions are irregular activities that can take place and be arranged by the request of members. If you would like a special session on test cutting or some new activity that we do not offer as standard, then please let us know, and we'll see if we can arrange a seminar or workshop at a weekend to cover it.

These sessions will have their own attendance fee, depending largely on the costs associated with organising and running the event. All guests, Members, and Premium Members will need to pay the attendance fee to participate in one of these events.

Other Opportunities

On days where there are no regular drop-in sessions scheduled, we may be running afternoon seminars or other one-off activities. If you would like to book some private tuition with an instructor, or hire the venue for a purpose of your own, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. We can even accommodate birthday parties or stag parties, if you would like to give your best friend an experience of sword fighting in Glasgow!
