About this course

Learn how to fence with the sword and buckler according to the short and concise fencing treatise by Andre Lignitzer.

The course is suitable for beginners and includes plenty of information to get you started with sword and buckler even if you have not had any previous experience of historical fencing. Additionally, there will be plenty of interesting ideas for more experienced practitioners as well, with a strong focus on skill development through coached exercises.

Although Lignitzer’s treatise only contains six sequences, there is a wealth of information that we can draw from these. The course will naturally follow the structure of these six lessons – but we will also look at how sequences and individual techniques can be integrated with other actions and other sequences, and perhaps even how you can start the sequence from one lesson and switch to another should the opportunity present itself.

The focus is to help you develop a good knowledge of what the source material means, and also to become able to improvise and capitalise upon opportunities in the moment they appear during your fencing.

About the instructor

Keith Farrell is a well-known professional HEMA instructor who has taught at events throughout the world. His main area of expertise is fencing with the longsword according to the German sources, although he has interest in several other HEMA disciplines as well. With a background in karate and modern fencing, and having been involved with HEMA since 2008, Keith’s understanding of historical fencing is extensive and improves further every year.

He has also authored and edited several books, and has won several medals in competitions over the years, demonstrating a high level of art, theory, and practice in a holistic fashion.
