Five Lines is known from Ancient Greece, where it was called “Pente grammai”. It became a popular game of chance in the Roman world.
It is mentioned in literature from the 2nd century AD and boards have been found inscribed into pavements dating to early Imperial times. There are sufficient hints in Latin literature for a set of rules to be proposed making a fast and exciting game.
