The warm up should be the first thing that you do. Because its purpose is to prepare you for the physical activity that is to follow, it makes sense to do the preparation before the activity that requires it!
You should start the session with a warm up, and only move on to any physical training once the warm up is complete. However, if you are going to stop moving and talk for any length of time, it makes sense to do this before the warm up if at all possible – it makes little sense to warm up and then cool down by standing around talking. Once you get into motion, try to stay in motion.
If you are a club instructor and are looking for inspiration for your warm ups, then a good suggestion might be the following order for activities:
- any talking or introduction to the class
- the warm up
- any physical training or conditioning that you might want to do, now that you are warm
- the main part of the lesson, while you are still warm
