Choosing the right weight of clubs
There is a video about this a little later in the course, but as a general rule of thumb, you should start with light clubs. Even if you are used to lifting heavy weights, working with a set of clubs uses very different muscles in a very different way, and you will be much more likely to injure yourself if you start with too heavy a club.
I can lift my own bodyweight quite happily, and even so, I prefer to use Indian clubs weighing about 250 to 500 grams each. They don’t need to be any heavier than this for you to have a good workout.
Space and environment for exercising
This should be fairly obvious, but it is worth stating anyway!
Make sure you have sufficient space around your and also overhead, so that when you swing your clubs, you are not at risk of breaking anything (or anyone) around you. If you feel yourself shying away from things or contorting yourself to fit into the space, then you probably aren’t in a good enough space, and you will not be getting the full benefit of doing the workout and may in fact set yourself up for injury because you are not standing properly.
Even if you choose fairly light clubs, they can still move through the air rather quickly, and they will hit quite hard if anything or anyone gets in the way. It might be sensible to make sure that no pets, lightbulbs, children, or other unsuspecting people are likely to wander into the path of your swings!
