HEMA in Glasgow is an exciting way for locals to become involved in the sport of historical sword-fighting!
HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts, which are the indigenous and traditional martial arts from Europe’s long and turbulent history. We work with textbooks written by medieval, renaissance, and early modern fencing masters; these include printed books and handwritten manuscripts which describe different ways of fighting with various weapons. We study these sources and teach the historical fighting systems as modern martial arts, with high quality training swords and modern protective equipment.
The Vanguard Centre is the foremost HEMA school in Glasgow, covering many historical fencing systems with tuition from professional instructors. We teach from basic principles, with a strong focus on body mechanics. Our belief is that by teaching people how to do things properly, it will all work more effectively, and there will be a much smaller chance of students developing a sport-related injury. Everything should be controlled and safe, both for yourself and for your training partner. HEMA in Glasgow is a safe and exciting activity that can challenge you physically while also stimulating your brain!
Our instructors have years of experience teaching historical sword fighting, and have taught at national and international events. We practise what we teach, putting our skills to the test in competitive settings, and have amassed quite a collection of medals and awards from competitions across the UK, Europe, and the USA.
