Andre Lignitzer was a fencing master in the late 14th or early 15th century. He is identified as the author of fencing treatises on several subjects:
- sword and buckler
- wrestling
- dagger
- armoured fighting
Although he did not write a gloss of Liechtenauer’s Zedel (at least, not that we know about that has survived until today), he was nonetheless named by Paulus Kal in his list of the 17 fencing masters who comprised the Geselschaft Liechtenawers, the society or company or fellowship that Liechtenauer seems to have created. Therefore, it is likely that Lignitzer would have been well versed in Liechtenauer’s methods and Zedel, in addition to the four treatises mentioned above.
Little else is known about him. We could speculate from his name that he came from the Polish town Legnica, known in German as Lignitz; other members of the Geselschaft Liechtenawers have names that could suggest an origin in a Polish town or city, so this is not particularly unbelievable, just unsubstantiated with any further evidence.
